Raveloe was a small village. Not many people lived thereand most of the people knew each other. Silas Marnerlived there, too. He came to Raveloe fifteen years ago.
He was a lonely man with an ordinary life but peoplefound him strange because they knew nothing abouthim. He did not talk much. He did not have any friends.
He worked at his cottage. He was a weaver. He used aloom to make cloth quickly.
